Lecture Abstract:
This lecture will cover recent information about cerebral small vessel disease including insights into the mechanisms and pathology, on small vessel lesions that are visible on brain imaging and how these relate to underlying tissue changes in apparently normal appearing tissue and abnormal tissue, the effect of visible lesions on remote brain regions, the underlying patterns of vascular dysfunction including blood-brain barrier dysfunction and glymphatic waste clearance, and the relationship to cognitive decline and other adverse clinical outcomes. It will also address current knowledge of prevention and treatment of cerebral small vessel disease including ongoing clinical trials testing novel compounds. The data will be from studies in patients and community dwelling volunteers and largely derive from studies using advanced brain and vascular imaging techniques paired with experimental medicine, cognitive, functional and blood biomarker assessments.
